The 2020 North American Car, Utility, and Truck of the Year Awards (NACTOY) panel of jurists have spoken, and the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator has won the coveted “best truck of the year” prize. It’s the most prestigious award in the industry, with 50 respected panelists made up of media professionals across the United States and Canada choosing the winner. In terms of segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction, and value for the dollar, the panel agreed that the new Gladiator was the undisputed king.

Truck of the Year

There were three finalists in this category: Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator and Ram Heavy Duty. Reflecting on the growing demand and popularity of trucks in the med-sized range, the Jeep Gladiator took home the top prize due to its unique features like a removable soft-top roof and removable doors.

As the longtime automotive journalist John Voelcker said, "The eagerly awaited Gladiator is a one-of-a-kind truck, every bit the Jeep as its Wrangler sibling, but with a pickup bed. How could you possibly get more American than that?"

With four standard models (Sport, Sport S, Overland and Rubicon) and two limited editions (Gladiator North and Mojave), the 2020 Gladiator leaves nothing behind. Marvelous standard features that cross over to all trims, plus several upgrades, make the Gladiator a winner.

Features That Make the Jeep Gladiator a Winner

Performance

On all standard models, there’s a 3.6-liter V-6 with 285 horsepower and 260 lbs-ft of torque. (A 3.0-liter V-6 diesel with 260 horsepower and 442 lbs-ft of torque is on the way.)

The max towing package handles 7,650 lbs., with a max payload of 1,600 lbs. The 31 inches of extended bed length allows for increased interior seating space and improved ride handling when carrying cargo. Of course, the majority of Jeep enthusiasts desire the off-road equipment available in their Jeep, from the many skid plates and the ability to forge through 30 inches of water, to the axle ratios that offer super rock-crawling ability and excellent approach and departure angles. Combined with the high-end ground clearance, these off-road traits put Gladiator above the pack, allowing adventure-seekers to venture out into the wild world of the unknown.

Infotainment and Interior Design

All 2020 Gladiator trucks have a standard touch screen. The optional 7.0- and 8.4-inch screens include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Additionally, Gladiator offers several outlets (USB-C and USB) the front riders. Optional upgrades include a subwoofer and wireless speakers for the back seat.

For driver and passenger comfort, Jeep included a heated steering wheel and front seats. The rear seats provide spacious legroom, and there are many storage compartments in the cabin. The doors and roof panels are removable for that open-air experience. Additionally, Gladiator’s rear seats can be removed for additional cargo space.

Robust Safety Features

The Jeep Gladiator has the most current safety and security technology. These features include adaptive cruise control with full stop action, rear cross-path detection, blind-spot monitor, and forward collision warning with active braking. For those who dislike parallel parking, Jeep has included ParkSense® rear park assist as an option. We like this feature most of all.
